Taking a Break

This winter break marks a unique moment - my first school break as a college student. Behind me are finals and classes and an amazing first semester as a UGA Bulldog. In front of me are home, family, friends, and the holidays. As exciting as this time may be, the thought of reconnecting with so many people after weeks or even months apart can feel a bit overwhelming. Here are some useful strategies that I aspire to use to ensure my last day of break will carry the same energy as the first.

As someone who yearns to make sure those around me are happy, I sometimes neglect my own well-being. This break, I am setting aside days just for me, Mornings to sleep in, sip hot tea, and catch up on my favorite shows and articles. This mindful recharging will allow me to focus on myself and be fully present for others.

It is essential to express gratitude. Home, camp, school; no matter where I am I always carry a journal on me. But during busy school weeks, journaling is often the first thing cut out of my routine. Breaks give me the chance to journal and express what I am thankful for, to reflect on successes and challenges, and acknowledge what I will carry into the future

Family gatherings are the highlights of my breaks. While they can feel a bit overwhelming at times, respecting everyone’s opinions and truly listening to others builds a positive space, where the focus is on connection and embracing the season.

Reconnect with friends! Surround yourself with people who build you up. The best part about break, for me, is choosing who to stay in contact with. Connect with your friends, especially those who guide joy into your life. Something as simple as a girl’s craft night not only lets your creative side shine but also creates the space for your group to reunite!

This winter break, I am prioritizing myself and putting the stress of finals season on pause so that I can ensure joy within myself and share it with others! Endless opportunities await when we return, but for now, this time is for reflecting, recharging, and focusing on our comfort.
